KUCHING: A man was sentenced to two years in prison by the Sessions Court here for burning five sacks of paddy belonging to his acquaintance, causing a loss to the tune of RM500.

Augustine Carlebim Fabian, 33, pleaded guilty to the charge on yesterday that was read out before judge Afidah Abdul Rahman.

According to the charge, he committed the act at a house in Kampung Abang, Jalan Puncak Borneo, at about 2am, last April 20.

He was charged under Section 435 of the Penal Code.

According to the facts of the case, on the day of the incident, the complainant lodged a police report when he found five sacks of paddy placed outside his house being burned by the accused.

On April 24, a team from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Padawan IPD arrested the accused at an unnumbered hut in Kampung Abang.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Aiman Mutallib Mohamad Shariff requested that the court impose an appropriate punishment on the accused as a lesson.

It was said that the accused committed the act because there was a misunderstanding between the complainant and the accused.

For the record, in 2016, the accused was sentenced to four years in prison by the Magistrates’ Court for molesting an eight-year-old girl. He was charged under Section 354 of the Penal Code.
