Man held for assaulting medical officer

KUCHING: A 19-year-old suspect believed to be drunk, was taken into custody by police on Saturday for having obstructed and damaged an ambulance and also assaulted a medical officer at Jalan Kulas, Satok.

According to Kuching District police chief ACP Awang Din Awang Gani, the incident happened around 6.20pm in front of CIMB Bank Satok.

He stated that the ambulance with three personnel was heading for Kampung Lintang that evening when they were obstructed by the suspect who is a ‘pondan’ (gay man).

“The suspect attempted to stop the ambulance in the middle of the road and then smashed the left-side window while shouting.

“The medical officer tried to placate the man but was assaulted instead. The assaulter also tore the medical officer’s personal protection equipment (PPE),” he said in a statement yesterday.

The aggressor then fled the scene leaving the medical officer with minor injuries.

Awang Din noted that the police responded immediately and managed to arrest the suspect around 10.30pm near Lorong Satok, here.

The suspect, who works as a general employee in a supermarket, is now under remand.

The case will be investigated under Section 186, 323, and 427 of the Penal Code.

Section 186 states that whoever voluntarily obstructs any public servant in the discharge of his public functions, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years or with fine which may extend to RM10,000 or with both.

Section 323 states that whoever … voluntarily causes hurt shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year or with fine which may extend to RM2,000 or with both.

Whereas Section 427 states that whoever commits mischief and thereby causes loss or damage to the amount of RM25 or upwards, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term of not less than one year and not more than five years or with fine or with both.
