SIBU: An unemployed man was arrested for attempting to murder a policeman during a raid by an anti-narcotic police team.

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said that the raid at the rented residence of the suspect’s family in Jalan Huo Ping at 5.45pm on June 17 was carried out following a report lodged by the suspect’s mother that he had ran amok.

He added that when the team arrived at the house gate, a 32-year-old police officer introduced himself to the suspect, 26.

“The suspect quickly ran into his room and the police officer and his team followed suit. The man then suddenly came out of the room and swung a sword at the officer who managed to duck in the nick of time,” he said.

Seeing that the suspect was after them, the policemen ran out of the house and closed the gate.

A MPV team arrived soon after to beef up their strength.

“The suspect was told to calm down. As he went back into the house, the policemen followed and detained him although he resisted arrest,” Jonathan said.

The police also seized the sword and a packet which contained methamphetamine from the suspect.

Initial investigation revealed that the suspect was under the influence of drug at the time of the incident.

The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder of a civil servant.
