KUCHING: Police have arrested the main suspect behind the recent viral video in Bintawa and seized the weapon used in the crime last Sunday.
Acting Kuching police chief Supt Merbin Lisa said that a CID team, acting on information, arrested the 23-year-old suspect around 11pm.
The suspect, who went viral for allegedly beating up another man with two objects in front of a supermarket on May 9, was arrested in front of a budget hotel in King Centre.
“Following the arrest, the team managed to seize a rubber pipe which was believed to be used by the suspect in the crime.
“Background checks found that the suspect had a record related to drugs,” he told.
Merbin pointed out that the suspect is now remanded until May 21 to facilitate investigations under Section 324 of the Penal Code for causing injuries with weapons, which carries a jail term up to 10 years or fine or whipping.
On the day of the incident, the 29-year-old victim was accused by the suspect for stealing goods at the scene, which led to the suspect beating the victim with two objects — a wooden plank and a rubber pipe.
Following the incident, the victim suffered injuries on his head, bruises on his back, swollen arms and legs, injuries on his left leg and a wound on his left elbow.
The victim received treatment at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).
