MIRI: A local man, in his 50s, was injured during an explosion triggered by a gas leak at the Forest Department office at Jalan Miri-Pujut here on Monday morning (Dec 7).

The explosion was believed to have occurred at 7.45am and the man was rushed to the hospital for immediate treatment by the forestry staff.

The Miri fire station despatched firefighters to the scene after receiving a distress call on the incident around 8am.

Operations commander Mohamad Hamdani Madon reported that they found a gas leak and informed a Sarawak Gas team to be on standby.

No extinguishing operation was carried out at the scene. The firefighters isolated the main electrical panel board and the building’s carbon dioxide (Co2) system.

The firefighters remained on standby at the scene for any possible fire outbreak until the Miri fire station’s Forensic Unit arrived at the scene.

Sources said the explosion damaged a laundromat and three cars parked in front of the forestry office.
