Man jailed two years for firearm offence

Limbang being brought out of court after he was sentenced.

SIBU: A 32-year-old mechanic was sentenced to two years in prison by the Sessions Court here yesterday after pleading guilty to two counts of possessing a firearm without a valid licence.

The defendant, Limbang Mukan, who was unrepresented, was sentenced to one year in prison for each charge, and both sentences were ordered to run concurrently by Judge Caroline Bee Majanil.

He faced two charges under Section 8 (a) of the Arms Act 1960, which provides for imprisonment not exceeding seven years or a fine not exceeding RM10,000 or both.

Based on the case brief, he was found in possession of a shotgun and an air rifle on June 19 at 11.45pm at a longhouse in Jalan Oya. 

Police also found 19 beads in a small black bag along with alcohol that was used for the air rifle.

In his appeal, Limbang said the firearm was used for hunting purposes.

He also said that he was married and had a child to look after, apart from his elderly father.
