MIRI: A 29-year-old man lost RM12,867 after he fell prey to an online job offer syndicate recently.

Miri OCPD ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, who confirmed the case, said the incident happened at 6.36 pm on May 17 when he met a woman through the Facebook Dating application.

The victim later gave his phone number in order to talk to the scammer via WhatsApp.

“During their conversation, the scammer introduced the victim to a ‘sales mission’ product to get a commission. The next day at 10.18 pm, the scammer contacted the victim for help to make a ‘mission underline’.

“The victim was then contacted by another person who explained the steps to make the ‘mission’. He was told to click on the link provided and make payment for one item in order to get a profit of five percent,” said Alexson, adding that the victim had made three investments and made profits.

He pointed out that the scammer succeeded in convincing the victim to make an investment of RM4,289 and then another investment of RM8,578.

On Thursday at 10.18 am, the victim called the investment customer service centre, but could not reach it.

“The victim, who felt cheated, then lodged a police report for further investigation,” he said.

Alexson added that the case was being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and dishonestly inducing the surrender of property.
