Man nabbed for carrying meat cleaver with ill-intent

PADAWAN: Police have arrested a local man for allegedly carrying a meat cleaver with ill-intention at a premises along Jalan Stephen Yong Link on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old suspect, who was spotted in suspicious circumstances at the premises, was swiftly apprehended by members of the public and the police were alerted of the incident at around 11.10 pm.

Padawan police chief Supt Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said the suspect was taken into custody by a Padawan crime prevention patrol team, which was despatched to the scene.

Further examinations found that the suspect had sustained injuries to the head and body and a meat cleaver was found in his bag.

“Investigations found that on Aug 25, the suspect had gone viral on Facebook in connection with suspected thefts in the area.

“The suspect claimed that the person who had viralled his photo, was the owner of the premises that he had purportedly attempted to break into prior to his apprehension.

“The suspect reportedly admitted to carrying the meat cleaver with intent of looking and confronting the premises owner,” he said in a statement.

Abang Zainal stated that the suspect is currently remanded at Beratok police lockup until Sept 1 to facilitate investigations.

The case is being investigated under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.
