Man pleads guilty to drug abuse, gets two months

KUCHING: A 44-year-old man was sentenced to two months in prison by the Magistrate’s Court after pleading guilty to drug abuse activities.

Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi passed sentence on Zaidel Ibrahim from Kampung Lintang after a charge was read out in front of him.

The court ordered the accused to serve his jail term starting Wednesday (May 11), and would be under police surveillance for two years after the expiration of the sentence.

Based on the charges, he was accused of injecting amphetamine and methamphetamine into his body.

The accused was charged under Section 15 (1) (a) ADB 1952 (Act 234) and sentenced under Section 15 of the same Act, which carries a fine of up to RM5,000 or imprisonment for a maximum of two years, if convicted.

According to the facts of the case, on Jan 25, around 11.30am, at the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division Office of Kuching IPD, the man was arrested on suspicion of being involved in drug abuse activities.

Preliminary results of the accused’s urine test were positive for drugs. Later, a report from the Pathology Department of Sarawak General Hospital confirmed that the accused was positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine use.

The prosecution was handled by Insp Nur Syafiqa Nyaie Ilin while the accused was unrepresented.
