BAU: A 55-year-old man was shot dead by his older brother who apparently mistook him for a mousedeer during a hunting trip.

The incident occurred at around 10.45pm last Saturday (Apr 10) in a forest at Kampung Stenggang, here.

Bau District police chief DSP Poge Nyaon, in a statement on Sunday, said police have arrested the older brother, aged 60 at his home in Kampung Stenggang later that night.

“According to the suspect, he and his younger brother went to the forest at 7pm to hunt for mousedeers, while his brother would look for frogs in a nearby river.

“Upon reaching the location, the suspect and the victim split up. While the suspect was hunting, he heard a sound at the riverbank and saw what he thought was a mousedeer and fired a shot at the object.

“After the shot was fired, the suspect heard screams and upon examination, he found the bloodied body of his brother,” Poge said.

He added that the suspect panicked and ran back to his house and informed his other siblings of the incident.

The body was later retrieved by villagers with the help of firemen from Bau Fire Station.
