MIRI: Two individuals including a teenager sustained injuries in an attempt to save themselves from a burning rental room at Jalan Bukit, Taman Jelita on Wednesday (May 8).

It was reported that the victims leaped out of the room on the second floor of a commercial shophouse.

During the ordeal, a 27-year-old man injured his back while a 15-year-old boy sustained waist and leg injuries.

Both injured victims were rushed to Miri Hospital for further medical treatment.

A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said that firefighters from Miri and Lopeng stations were dispatched to the scene after receiving a distress call at 9.29 pm.

Upon arrival, they found that the flames had destroyed the second floor and caused about 10 percent damages to the third floor.

The extinguishing of the fire was carried out using water sourced from a nearby fire hydrant. The flames were brought under control at 10.17 pm.

Overhaul works followed suit to ensure no reignition at the scene.

The team ended the operation at 11.24 pm. The cause of the fire and losses incurred is still under investigation.
