KUCHING: An unemployed man, who killed his grandmother over RM30, was sentenced to 12 years’ jail by the Sessions Court here.

Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman yesterday (June 15) ordered Azizan Zainal to serve his sentence from the date of his arrest, Sep 21, 2020.

However, as the Prisons Department is currently under the movement control order, the 27-year-old will be detained at the Gita police station temporarily until a notice is issued.

He was charged under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to 30 years and is liable to a fine upon conviction.

Based on the facts of the case, the accused stabbed his grandmother,  Dara Mohamad, 66, to death with a knife between 8.15 pm on Sept 20 and 6.30 am on Sepy 21 last year at a house in Kampung Rampangi, Jalan Sultan Tengah here.

After the crime, he washed the knife with soap and water and kept it in his bedroom at the grandmother’s house.

He later fled and hid in an empty house near the scene before being arrested by members of the public the next day.

Police believed that the grandmother died as a result of being stabbed several times by the accused using a sharp weapon. He  did so because she refused to give him RM30.

An autopsy on the deceased found that she died due to injuries on her head and neck.

Meanwhile, earlier this year, the accused was detained in the psychiatric ward of Sentosa Hospital for mental examination and results found that he did not have any mental symptoms and therefore, could undergo trial.

The accused was then sent to a mental health centre on the instructions of the deputy prosecutor’s office under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

A review of past records found that he had two records for drugs.

In his appeal, the accused asked for a lighter sentence. Deputy public prosecutor Nurfadzlin Mahmad Zulhasnan prosecuted.
