KUCHING: Hope of Place Kuching (Hope Kuching) has appealed to generous donors to come forward to provide assistance to 54-year-old Bujang Amid, who is suffering from a colon disease.

Bujang, a father of two adult children, had been diagnosed with ulcer in the lining of his large intestine.

On June 9, he underwent an ostomy surgery to remove part of his colon.

Ostomy surgery is a life-saving procedure that allows bodily waste to pass through a surgically created stoma on the abdomen into a prosthetic known as a “pouch” or “ostomy bag” on the outside of the body or an internal surgically created pouch for continent diversion surgeries.

Due to the surgery, Bujang now has to wear an ostomy pouch attached to his lower abdomen to collect stool or urine.

Bujang is relieved that the damaged part of his colon had been successfully removed. His predicament, however, has not ended.

Instead Bujang, who was a lorry driver, had to stop work since two months ago due to his medical condition, has to face another big challenge — to purchase the ostomy pouch for his daily use.

A set of the ostomy pouch is priced around RM30 and each ostomy pouch can last up to only three days.

Bujang, who lives with his family in Kampung Pengkalan Kuap, Jalan Datuk Muhammad Musa near here, simply could not afford it.

After he fell ill, his family has to depend solely on the meagre income of his daughter who is selling “kuih”.

Bujang was forced to stop working on his doctor’s advice, who had placed him under close observation for at least seven to eight months.

Not knowing where to seek for help, Bujang recently approached the special assistant to Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) Zulfadhli Samawi, who later referred his case to Hope Place Kuching.

Hope Place Kuching later gave Bujang a one-off contribution of special milk and other food rations.

It also expressed hope that Bujang would be able to find generous donors to assist him with the purchase of the ostomy pouches.
