MIRI: A female manager of a building material supplier in Miri fell victim to a scam involving a fake school building project tender, resulting in a loss of RM78,000.

Miri police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu confirmed receiving a report on the incident on April 4.

“In the incident, the manager, in her 30’s, has become the victim of a scam involving a non-existent project tender for upgrading school buildings in Miri,” he said.

The incident came to light when the manager responded to a call from an anonymous individual claiming to be from the Miri District Education Office. The caller offered lucrative tender projects for upgrading school buildings in Miri.

As their conversations progressed, the scammer subtly manipulated the situation, urging the manager to make advance payments to secure the procurement contracts.

The victim, eager to secure lucrative deals for the company, had transferred a total of RM78,000 to the scammer’s designated accounts.

It was only later that she realised she had been deceived, as attempts to reach the purported officer for confirmation were unsuccessful.
