KUCHING: A whole cake, for RM1,600? Really? Would one go to the extent of paying that much for a cake?

In April, Tom’s Restaurant, located at Jalan Padungan here became a sensation after a well known food blog called KL Foodie featured their 2kg special mango cake.

It is not just some local mango but the world’s most expensive and exclusive mango, the Japanese Miyazaki Mango.

The Miyazaki mango is known for its flaming bright red colour and is wholesomely sweet.

It is grown in Miyazaki city in Japan’s Kyushu prefecture, hence that is where the name of fruit came from, and it was primarily grown and first harvested in the year 1984.

According to KL Foodie, one Miyazaki mango fruit can cost more than RM200 in the market, and at Tom’s Restaurant, they are using four fruits to make their premium cake.

The food blog also said that Tom’s Restaurant is selling a whole Japanese Miyazaki Mango cake for RM1,600.

To spend that big a sum on a cake may be too much for some but the food blog said that customers can also buy in slices priced at RM180 each.

A cake lover who wished to be known as Nicole, said she didn’t mind spending RM180 to have a taste of the cake.

“Since it is available here in Kuching, why not give it a try?,” she said, laughing.

She also said that she wouldn’t be surprised if people buy the whole cake as she has seen people spending thousands of ringgit buying Musang King durians.

But if you are curious, you will have to wait as Tom’s Restaurant said they are not selling the cake at the moment. They depend on the availability of the fruit.
