MIRI: A detainee escaped from the immigration detention facility in Bekenu yesterday morning. A manhunt for the Bangladeshi man was launched immediately after his disappearance was
discovered around 7.50am.

The detainee is believed to be naked when he escaped from the detention facility as his clothes and pants were found entangled in the razor wire fence.

Miri police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah confirmed receiving a report on the incident when met yesterday at the ‘Townhall discussion’ session at Sarawak Islamic complex at Jalan
Miri-Pujut.

“From our preliminary check, we believe that the detainee fled the facility by scaling its razor fence, and  while escaping, his clothes and pants were entangled on the fence.

“The discovery was made around 7.50am by the facility’s officer during a food  distribution round.”  Lim revealed that the detainee was confined in the facility (The Immigratiom Depot) since September 6 this year.

“He was arrested in Bintulu under Section 15(1)(C) of the Immigration Act 1963 and was waiting to be deported back to his country of origin,” Lim said. There are three villages located adjacent to the complex facility – Kampung Hangus, Kampung Jambu and Kampung Bungai. At press time, the detainee has yet to be found and the manhunt is ongoing.
