SIBU: A 59-year-old man was arrested for allegedly severing another man’s hand at the wrist in front of a house in Jalan Hua Kiew here on Thursday (Feb 18).

The incident happened around 7pm when the victim, 21, and his girlfriend arrived at the house to find it in a mess with pieces of glass scattered inside.

Shortly after, the suspect arrived on his motorcycle, entered the house and came out with a machete in hand.

The victim’s girlfriend, 28, claimed that the suspect accused them of breaking into the house and stealing, to which the victim and his girlfriend denied the allegation.

The suspect refused to believe them, and swung the machete at the victim twice and severed the victim’s left hand at the wrist.

Sibu police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit, who confirmed the case, said the suspect was arrested by a CID team after they were alerted of the incident.

“The victim was rushed to Sibu Hospital for immediate treatment. The victim, who is now stable, sustained total amputation of left hand at the wrist and superficial laceration wound over the left shoulder.

“The investigating team questioned the victim’s girlfriend, who is a witness to the incident, and found that both (victim and girlfriend) are homeless.

“They have been living together for the past two weeks and have stayed at the house for two days.

“The witness claimed that she saw the suspect going back to the scene to clean traces of blood and leaving. The witness knew the suspect because the suspect was the owner of a house next door.”

ACP Stanley noted that a CID team and a K-9 unit made efforts to locate the victim’s severed hand and the machete used by the suspect but to no avail as it was believed to have been thrown away by the suspect.

The suspect denied such act or any knowledge of the incident during interrogation.

ACP Stanley pointed out that the suspect had mental health problems for the past few years but refused to undergo treatment.

He believed that the suspect became furious when the house next to his was entered by the victim and his girlfriend without permission.

The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for deliberately causing serious injury by using a weapon.
