KUCHING: Sarawak House and Sarawak Volunteers, entities overseeing the wellbeing of Sarawakian students outside the state, are doing their best to help Sarawak students in Malaya and Sabah who were affected by the movement control order (MCO) which began on March 18.

It was reported that all universities and higher institutions of learning (IPTs) throughout the country ordered the students to leave their college residences on the first day of the MCO.

As a result, some students from Sarawak are stranded without any accommodation. They are also not able to get the “Rentas Negeri” permission forms for them to come back home due to overwhelming response from the public.

A representative of Sarawak House said that the team was currently providing accommodation to these students.

“Some of them contacted us and said that they wanted to go home. Unfortunately, we are not able to handle such cases but only can give them advices.

“We are still calculating the number of cases that we are currently handling as they are still coming in,” she told New Sarawak Tribune.

Besides accommodation, the team is also providing food and drinks to the Sarawak students during MCO.

On March 18, Sarawak Volunteers advisor Fazzruddin Abdul Rahman said some students had complained that they were asked to leave their hostels following the temporary closure of their respective IPTs.

He advised students facing any problems to contact Sarawak House and Sarawak Volunteers on Facebook, adding that they would try their best to help them.

“The Chief Minister himself has directed Sarawak House to look into the welfare of the students affected by the movement control order.

“We also advised our students to restrict their movements and adhere to the directive given by the government and the relevant authorities,” he said.
