KUCHING: Police on Tuesday (May 18) arrested a married couple for possessing drugs worth more than RM500 in a house at Jalan Stutong.

Acting Kuching police chief Supt Merbin Lisa said a narcotics team was deployed to the scene following a public tip-off.

The man and woman, aged 24 and 21, were detained for inspections around 11 am as they were suspected to be involved in drug activities.

“The team found nine plastic packets containing crystalline lumps, believed to be syabu, weighing around 5.28g in the man’s bag.

“The couple and the drugs valued at RM528 were taken to the police station for further action,” said Merbin.

Background checks found that the man had a past drug-related record and had been involved in drug distribution activities since 2019.

The man, who tested positive for drugs, had obtained the drugs by banking in to another dealer in the district. Efforts to locate the other dealer are now in full swing.

Merbin said the suspect’s spouse, who did not have a past record, tested negative for drugs.

“The couple is now remanded until May 22 to facilitate investigations under Section 39A (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a jail term up to five years and whipping up to nine lashes, if convicted,” he added.

Merbin urged the public to channel information on activities pertaining to drug distribution and drug abuse to the police to enable them to take action.
