KUCHING: Martial arts are not only about a healthy practice, but they also connect everyone from all over the world, said Minister in the Chief Minister’s office (Integrity and Ombudsman) Datuk Talib Zulpilip.

According to him, through one’s involvement in martial arts, it provides the opportunity for the practitioners to interact with other martial artists from other parts of the world.

“This is an opportunity, through international martial arts event, to exchange ideas and skills with martial artists from other countries.

“It (the event) also helps to inculcate the value of mutual respect, tolerance and co-operation among martial artists all over the world,” said Talib in his speech during the Nanyang Wushu World Hall of Fame Award Luncheon ceremony held at Penview Hotel, yesterday.

He added that martial arts also promote global peace and harmony, and at the same time they help in boosting the tourism industry by bringing tourists and martial artists from all over the world.

Earlier on, President of International Martial Arts Research Institute Prof. Dato Sri Dr Song Swee Hee said the event objective was to give recognition and honours to dedicated martial artists who have shown outstanding contribution towards the development and promotion of martial arts.

He said all of the martial artists have dedicated many years of hard work and practice and promote their arts to members of the public without any recognition and rewards.

“They are the unsung heroes of the community as they have contributed so much to the welfare and recreational needs of their own communities without expecting any rewards, especially monetary or materials profits.

“Therefore, we feel that they deserve to be acknowledged for their hard work and efforts all these years,” said Song.

He also hoped that all the honorees will take the opportunity to showcase their best skills to the public, as well as to learn from others so as to improve their own skills and knowledge.
