Marudi registers fewer crimes

MARUDI: Movement restrictions in light of the Covid-19 pandemic helped to keep a lid on crime here last year.

“The number of cases dropped by 10 per cent to 66 last year compared to 73 in 2020,” said district police chief DSP Mohd Ruslan Mat Kib.

“The pandemic and restrictions imposed helped bring down crime rates in the district,” he said during the police monthly assembly on Tuesday (Jan 18).

In 2020, Ruslan disclosed that 13 violent crimes were recorded and resolved, compared to 14 out of 15 cases reported in 2021.

In this regard, he said there were five cases of rape in 2021 compared to only three in 2020.

“All cases (rapes) have been brought to court,” he said.

As for property crime,  60 cases were reported in 2020, compared to 51 cases in 2021.

At the assembly Ruslan reminded his men to always uphold integrity and be more disciplined in discharging their duties.

A total 29 policemen and members of the public received a certificates of appreciation for their part in solving crimes.
