KUCHING: Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing has been appointed as the acting chairman of the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

His appointment was by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg for the period of Nov 18 until Dec 17.

The Baleh assemblyman will be filling in for SDMC chairman and Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas who is currently recuperating after a minor medical procedure earlier this week.

Uggah is currently on a month’s leave after a minor operation to unblock an artery to the heart and is reported to be in stable condition.

Masing is also chairman of the SDMC border security subcommittee where he has been tasked to curb the entry of illegals to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Prior to this, Cabinet ministers such as Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian and Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah have deputised for Uggah.

Among Masing’s tasks as SDMC chairman will primarily be spearheading the battle to curb the Covid-19 situation statewide and updating the general public on the SDMC policy decisions.
