KUCHING: A mass screening to weed out Covid-19 cases has been conducted in Sibu Jaya today, said Education, Science and Technological Research Assistant Minister Dr Annuar Rapaee.

He said the large-scale screening was conducted at the Sibu Jaya market with a number of local residents showing up early in the morning.

“There are those came prepared with umbrellas due to the hot sun, some did not and there are also those who brought their children with them.

“All of this is in the name of protecting their loved ones. To those who have not come forward for screening, please do so and come early.

“Together we will work to help the Health Ministry to detect the outbreak of Covid-19 cases that occurred in Sibu Jaya. To those who showed up this morning, thank you for doing so,” he said in a Facebook post today.

Dr Annuar also thanked those who are working on the frontline during the mass screening and hoped that they would remain safe when undertaking their responsibilities.

Last Friday, state Health director Dr Chin Zin Hing said the screening was conducted due to an increase in positive Covid-19 cases in Sibu Jaya.

“This is to enable early isolation to be carried out as well as to prevent it from further spreading,” he said, adding that the Health Ministry is committed to combating the increase of Covid-19 positive cases in Sibu.

In a separate post, Dr Annuar said the movement control order (MCO) in Sibu has yet to reflect the reduction of Covid-19 cases.

He said this meant that the infection is actively occurring in Sibu without any specific locations and not limited to the longhouses.

“As long as we continue to be on the move, Covid-19 will continue to infect us. We have no other choice, we have to stay at home,” he said.
