KUCHING: The state government will develop an e-commerce master plan, said the Chief Minister. “The e-commerce world is still developing rapidly and it is not too late for us to take part in it, therefore we suggest that we develop a Sarawak e-Commerce Master Plan so that we have a clear direction in our quest to assist our entrepreneurs and Sarawakians to be successful in their e-commerce endeavour,” said Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

His speech was read out by International Trade and Industry, Industrial Terminal and Entrepreneur Development Assistant Minister Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais on the first day of the Sarawak e-Commerce Forum at The Waterfront Hotel here yesterday.

“I urge that we continue to learn and uncover new skills and technology to remain relevant and competitive in the e-commerce industry.

“Do not rest on your laurels but take this opportunity to explore the many possibilities and pick up on the areas that suit your strengths and interests,” said Abang Johari.

“As much as the people are excited about the business opportunities in e-commerce, they must also be aware and alert  of the challenges in this industry.

“For example, promoting our products globally means we are competing with other producers worldwide, meaning we have to ensure our products meet international standard.

“The other area of concern is cyber scam and fraud which we must always be alert of. We need to be vigilant at all times to avoid being trapped by online scammers and do not be easily deceived by the quick rich scheme or love scam,” said the chief minister.

Naroden later told reporters that Sarawak currently only has a Digital Economy Master Plan.

“That is why I suggested the state government through my ministry and Datuk Len Talif’s ministry to do a comprehensive e-commerce master plan for the whole Sarawak.

“This will act as a guideline for the new generation of entrepreneurs to develop their skills, products and to disseminate information on any opportunities that we have in the state,” he said.
