KUCHING: Local authority Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has been urged to come out with a masterplan to assist with the development of kampungs (villages) under its jurisdiction for the betterment of the community.

Santubong MP Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the masterplan would list out the necessary infrastructure and facilities for the kampungs.

“Every kampung (village) that has its own dynamics where development is taking place and the community is progressive, (the kampung) will grow from every angle such as attraction, tourism, social, economy, etc.

“Taking Kampung Telaga Air as an example, maybe the roads should be widened, have more parking spaces, the stalls to undergo upgrades and other basic facilities for the community.

“That is why I have instructed MPP to come up with the masterplan,” he said to New Sarawak Tribune after officiating at the opening ceremony of Telaga Air Festival 2019 held at Kampung Telaga Air Waterfront here, yesterday.

Earlier, Wan Junaidi recommended that MPP take into consideration and discuss with the community on the ground in drafting the plan because the latter would be the ones utilising the developed infrastructures.

“Taking hawkers space as an example, the ones using it would be the vendors and the sellers so we have to take into account their concerns,” he said.

“Learn from Pasar Satok Kubah Ria where a lot of compartments are empty and of no use as many of the hawkers choose to run their trade on the streets.

“This is because when the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) planned the drawing of the building they did not include the stakeholders in the discussion.”

When asked how soon the masterplan is ready, Wan Junaidi stated that he will first contact the State Planning Unit for this purpose and liaise with the MPP to implement the masterplan in stages.

“If the state government approves and give the proposal its priority, we can expect the masterplan to be ready by next year,” he said.

Also present were MPP deputy chairman Cr Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim and organising chairman Cr Rabian Kipli.
