Police break up illegal races, stunts

PADAWAN: Almost 100 motorcycles of various types suspected to be involved in illegal racing, enlivened the traffic light area at Jalan SFC leading to Kopodim area in Matang Jaya today.

Around 5pm, the place was filled with a group of young men riding motorcycles dangerously as they competed with each other.

The open area was also a focal point for a group of teenagers who became spectators by sitting along the side of the road as if to support the riders to give their best performances and to do dangerous stunts on the road.

However, the activities finally ended when several Padawan mobile patrol vehicles came a few minutes after the area was filled with motorcyclists.

Padawan district police chief Supt Aidil Bolhassan said the illegal races happened on weekends.

He revealed that the police employed Ops Lumba Haram last week monitoring the location, but the activity could not be detected.

He stressed that their teams will be deployed to intensify the operation starting next week to prevent such activity from spreading further.

“These illegal racing can endanger other road users. If any of the riders get arrested, the police will take action as required by law under the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said.
