KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng yesterday laughed off suggestions that he might be contesting in the upcoming state election.
Wee, who is a member of Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Pending branch, said that he would rather focus on the mayor’s task on hand, which was serving the people of Kuching.
“How can I answer that? That is a sensitive question,” he replied in jest.
Wee added that he had only been the MBKS mayor for five months, there was still a lot that needed to be done.
“Don’t listen to rumours. I think that there are lot of other potential candidates. I will just keep to my job,” he told reporters when met at the MBKS building here yesterday.
On Sunday, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg hinted that the state election might be held this year.
The state election must be held by September 2021, three months after the current Sarawak Legislative Assembly’s term expires in June.
