KUCHING: Is Datuk Wee Hong Seng a potential Sarawak United People’s Party’s (SUPP) candidate for the 15th General Election (GE15)?

He says he has no clue.

And that his going to the ground to carry out his duty as mayor was not a sign that he is a potential candidate.

“I hear nothing about the election. So no comment,” said Wee who heads the Kuching City South Council (MBKS).

Speaking to reporters after the electric and electronic e-waste buy-back campaign at the Mayor Song Swee Guan Park here on Sunday (Sept 11) he said he intends to continue his duty as mayor for the time being.

“As far as I am concerned I am the mayor until the end of the year. So let me finish my duty as a mayor,” said Wee, who is also the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Pending branch vice chairman.

“I am not a sit-in-a-office mayor. I think it is important that we go to the ground and that is the only way we can see for ourselves rather than hearsay,” he pointed out.

On whether the SUPP Pending branch has discussed candidacy, Wee said he would leave that to branch chairman Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also the Deputy Premier.

“Of course, I think every branch needs to nominate a candidate.

“Because like what Dr Sim mentioned, all the parliamentary constituencies have either two to three state constituencies under it, so it is only fair that everybody lists out the person they want to be the candidate and from there a winnable candidate will be selected.

“So I think that should be the criteria. And we leave it to top leadership to decide,” he said.

Earlier commenting on public issues under the jurisdiction of MBKS, Wee said he appreciated the public voicing out any matters and hoped these could be conveyed through the proper channel.

“The expectations now are very high – people (raise the issues) on social media and all that.

“I do appreciate people looking at those issues and sending through the right channel so that they can reach us and we will try to act as soon as possible,” he said.
