KUCHING: Hawkers should run business in ethical way, serving with honesty and excellence.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor,  Datuk James Chan Khay Syn said it is a must to safeguard the quality and safety of products sold for the benefit of customers.

“With the upcoming economy changes, we are all aware of the difficult challenges we will be facing.

“Subject to this, hawkers should not drastically increase prices under any circumstances, and must adhere to prices set by the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry,” Chan pointed out during the swearing in ceremony of the MBKS Market Liaison Committee at Stutong Community Market here,  yesterday.

He said hawkers must also gain knowledge on digital initiatives and innovation on how these can improve the hawkers businesses, the environment, the community and their own hawkers’ life to grow in tandem with such businesses around the region.

“If the right technique and systems are adopted, it will not only spearhead the business to greater height but easier to do the business.

“Thus, technology is the key word in business nowadays and certainly apply to hawking and market situations,” he stressed.

Chan also reminded hawkers that it is important that the MBKS Market Liaison Committee could work well with the council.

“Whenever possible, new problems should be solved among hawkers themselves, mutually and peacefully and should not always depend on the council to become the mediator.

“We may come in when the problem cannot be solved properly. Remember the objectives of the Market Liasion Committee is not a means of asking for more and more without rationale but on the present resources and on how we can attract people to the market.

“ln fact, I would like our MBKS markets especially the main markets like Stutong, Kenyalang, Petanak to be markets for tourists and visitors to go to see the life of the people of Kuching,” he added.

The swearing in ceremony was the fourth since its first one in October 2011.
