KUCHING: It is a good initiative by the federal government to ban plastic bags by 2025, says Datuk Wee Hong Seng.
The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor stated that although the ruling had been implemented within areas under MBKS in 2018, he was now calling all supermarkets under MBKS to see what was the best way to stop providing plastic bags to customers.
“You see, if supermarkets still sell the plastic bags for RM0.20, then banning it would be meaningless.
“So we want to sit with the representative of the supermarkets so that we can discuss what is the most suitable move.”
He added that although from time to time, it was a good sign seeing people using their own bags at grocery stores, continuing to adapt to the rules was the most important step.
“I am really sure they will adapt, but we have to stop the supply first, and from there we will see how it goes.”
He said this at a press conference for the upcoming MBKS Kuching Car Free Morning here on Thursday (May 11).
“Regardless, it is time to make it a habit, in order to protect the environment, and for the sake of the future generation. We got to start somewhere.”
