KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will follow the action taken by Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) to compound errant eatery operators who are providing customers with single-use plastic straws.
MBKS mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said yesterday the trial period of the campaign would commence on March 1.
“We will implement the trial run for one month and then we will go on the ground on April 1. We will give them time to get used to it. People have been using straws for a long time,” he said.
Wee added that the council was still deliberating on the compound fee, but said that it is likely that RM50 imposed by SMC would be used as the baseline figure.
“But the penalty is not the main point. The most important thing is educating the people. Give people a chance and create awareness,” he said.
On the slogan for the campaign, Wee said that instead of using “Say no to plastic straws”, MBKS will be using more explanatory slogans such as “5 minutes in your drink, 500 years in the ocean”.
“This is because it is easier if you make people understand the effects of plastic straws when implementing the campaign,” he said.
Wee also revealed he met SMC chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horth over the weekend and held a discussion over the no-straw campaign.
It is better that we standardise whatever directives or campaigns implemented in one district or area and implement it statewide,” he said.
SMC implemented its ‘no plastic straw’ campaign in Sibu on February 1.
