KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is supporting local organic farmers by giving them a space to showcase their goods while promoting healthier eating choices among the public.

MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the need to back such efforts that align with the vision of a smart and healthy city.

“We are not asking everyone to be vegetarian, but to adopt a healthier diet by choosing organic produce.

“While some may perceive organic products as costly, it’s important to understand that the slightly higher price is a result of care involved during farming, and the farmers prioritise quality over quantity.

“This is what the council is looking for. By showcasing their products, these farmers are pursuing their passion, and as a council, it is our responsibility to ensure that they benefit from our assistance,” Wee told reporters at the 7th Kuching Natural Farmers’ Market held at MBKS carpark today.

“These farmers used to shift from place to place. After I saw their dedication on my fourth visit, I felt we should support them more,” he said.

According to him, the carpark is usually free on weekends, making it an ideal spot for the market.

Wee pledged ongoing support for these local farmers. “If this space becomes too small, we’ll find a new spot for them. Our aim is to highlight and celebrate our local farmers and what they offer,” he added.

However, he reminded the public to always get the needed permits before using public spaces for business. He cautioned, “Public areas are for everyone, but we can’t just use them without proper authorisation. We must ensure safety.”

The market today had 28 stalls, all selling local produce and homemade items. It was a hit, with many stalls running out of stock early on.
