MIRI: The Miri City Council (MCC) has collected 88 percent of the assessment rates from the total expected yield of RM40.7 million for this year as of Nov 30.

Its mayor, Adam Yii Siew Sang, said currently there are 70,292 rateable properties within the council’s jurisdiction, which includes residential, commercial and industrial holdings.

“From the total 70,292 rateable properties, the council expected to collect assessment rates totalling RM40.7 million for the current year rates.

“When the due date for the second half 2020 of the assessment rate ended on Nov 30, MCC managed to collect 88 percent from the total expected yield,” he said in a statement on Monday (Dec 14).

He added 30,313 rateable properties under the council’s jurisdiction had enjoyed a 25 percent discount on their assessment rates, as announced by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Openg recently, under the Sarawakku Sayang Special Aid Package (BKSS).

For those who have made full payment for this year, the excess payment will be credited to next year.

“Revenue collected from the assessment rates is important to help the council to make Miri City a sustainable city and give quality and efficient services to the people as a whole.

“As mayor of Miri City, I would like to say ‘Thank You to all Mirians for your contributions in paying your assessment rates. Together we develop Miri and make Miri a lovely resort city where we can proudly say Miri is My Home, My Pride’,” he stressed.

In conjunction with the council’s 15th Anniversary, its Rating and Valuation Department has initiated several programmes to increase awareness for the ratepayers to pay their assessment rates timely.

The programmes held included two roadshows on promotion of assessment rates at Pasar Malam Saberkas (Sept 4) and Pasar Besar Krokop (Sept 26), the 2020 Assessment Rate Promotional Video Competition, and the 5KM Miri City Virtual Run 2020.

Participants can claim their medals by January next year from MCC’s Rating & Valuation Department.
