MUKAH: The Movement Control Order (MCO) has rendered the tibou (giant swing) at Kampung Tellian Daya (Tellian Ulu) here almost useless now.

It was erected on March 14 before the MCO was enforced on March 18.

It has been a tradition of sorts in past years for the people to erect the tibou in their village in conjunction with the annual Mukah Kaul at Kala Dana beach here.

This year — and also for the first time — the tibou was made of better and harder wood (belian) compared to ordinary ones previously.

The festival is aimed at promoting and preserving the Melanau culture in this district.

The tibou provided a fun activity for the villagers, especially the young people, and was also an attraction to visitors in previous years.

However, this year it has been a different story due to the MCO and the Covid-19 pandemic.

The tibou will be dismantled sooner or later as the main tourism event, the Mukah Kaul 2020 at Kala Dana beach here scheduled for April 12 until 19, has been postponed.
