KUCHING: Since 10am yesterday, Medan Niaga Satok wet market here was crowded with shoppers buying stocks for Hari Raya, a day ahead of celebration.

A check by New Sarawak Tribune yesterday found many shoppers carefully looking around to select the best offers they could get.

Shoppers were also seen carrying multiple bags of produce such as meat, seafood and eggs.

Of all the stalls, shops selling coconut milk received a steady stream of shoppers who needed the commodity for making Raya staples like ketupat, kelupis and rendang.

One of the sellers, who wanted to be known only Nadhirah, said coconut milk was demanded not only by the locals but also the people of neighbouring countries.

“Those from Brunei and Pontianak, Indonesia came over to the shop last week. They bought many packets of coconut milk and other products to bring back home for the Raya celebration,” said Nadhirah who was helping in her family business.

Shopper Dyg Khamsiah Awg Omar, 60, said she had bought non-perishable items like meat a week earlier to avoid last minute rush.

“I bought items like onions, ginger and garlic earlier as they can last longer.

“I’ve done all the cleaning and preparation. Now, I just need to cook for tomorrow morning,” she said.

A married couple, who wished to be known as Mokhsin and his wife, Nanie, were about to shop yesterday.

According to Mokhsin, his wife was not able to shop earlier as she was busy with her work.

“My wife is a nurse. She only just started her week-long holidays today,” he said.
