Media veteran, Pak Aziz dies at 87

KUCHING: Former Sarawak Tribune and Utusan Sarawak editor-in-chief, Abdul Aziz Malim or ‘Pak Aziz’ as he was known, passed away on Wednesday after a short illness at the age of 87.

He breathed his last at 11.30am at his home in USJ12 in Subang Jaya, Selangor.

Pak Aziz can look back at an illustrious career as a media and PR practitioner. He served as a PR officer with Shell in Lutong and travelled worldwide on Shell assignments to Lagos in Nigeria, The Hague, London while being based in Brunei.

He returned to Kuala Lumpur just before the outbreak of the May 13 riots where he served as Press Officer with the Information department and eventually headed the Publications Unit as Deputy Director.

He retired at 55, soon to be picked up to head Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu (PBB) Sarawak’s bi-weekly bulletin Jiwa Bakti serving as Editor.

He continued to serve as Editor-in-Chief of Sarawak Tribune and Utusan Sarawak whilst having been appointed as Director of Sarawak Press Sdn Bhd, Warta Distributors Sdn Bhd and Jacamar Sdn Bhd.  He returned to KL briefly before he was hired by The Eastern Times in 2006 as News Executive not wanting his vast experience to go to waste.

Subsequently, he was appointed as one of the directors of AsiaPR in 2010 and finally called it quits in 2011 and remained as a senior advisor of the company till 2014 at the age of 83.

Someone who was known to be simple, humble, hardworking, meticulous, sincere and loyal, slogged tirelessly for his family.

He was laid to rest on Wednesday afternoon after Assar prayers at the USJ 21 Muslim Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Sa’amah, nine children (three deceased), 19 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was a recipient of the Ahli Mangku Negara (AMN) and Pingat Jasa Kebaktian (PJK).
