SIBU: Methodist Pilley Institute (MPI) has introduced two diploma specialised courses in social work this semester, namely Child and Family Welfare, and Working with Older People.

MPI said the two courses will be facilitated by Gill Raja and Dr Ling How Kee respectively.

“Both are retired academics of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) with more than 35 years of teaching, research and practical experiences in their respective fields while still being actively involved in other areas of social work,” MPI said in a statement today.

The Child and Family Welfare course covers family dynamics, child protection, and support systems, preparing students to effectively intervene and advocate the well-being of children and families.

Meanwhile, the Working with Older People course focuses on ageing issues, mental well-being, and holistic care, enabling students to address the evolving needs of older adults and enhance their overall quality of life.

“Both courses not only aim to prepare students to competently work as a social worker on the front line, but also offer opportunities for them to enhance their knowledge and skills on a personal basis and in organisational settings.

“What makes our programme unique is its flexibility, allowing students to pursue studies while balancing other commitments.

“We understand the importance of practical experience; therefore, our curriculum incorporates real-world case studies and opportunities for hands-on learning,” MPI said.
