KUCHING: The Sarawak government will provide any form of assistance to two state-based football clubs competing in the M-League.

Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said both Sarawak United Football Club (SUFC) and Kuching City Football Club (KCFC) were in the top-tier Super League and second-tier Premier League respectively.

“They have full support from the state government so that they are able to do well in their matches.

“The government and my ministry will provide assistance in the form of sports and training facilities, financial assistance or management to keep them going.”

Abdul Karim said this after the unveiling of SUFC’s 2022 kit at Mydin Petra Jaya, on Thursday night (March 3).

SUFC earned promotion to the Super League after finishing second in last season’s Premier League.

SUFC took on Kedah at Stadium Negeri Sarawak yesterday at 8.15pm in the new season opener.

Meanwhile, Abdul Karim said: “Any team in the Super League will need time to pick up the pace. I hope they (SUFC) will reach peak level as the season goes on and show fans how good they are.”

When asked on the allowed capacity in the stadium, he said as per standard operating procedures (SOP), only 20,000 fans were allowed.

“Stadium Negeri Sarawak has a capacity of 40,000 but as per SOP, only 50 per cent is allowed.”
