BINTULU: The opening of China’s borders is expected to have a positive impact, especially to Malaysia’s tourism and trade, says federal Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

Speaking at the 2023 New Year’s Eve celebration here, he said that China was one of Malaysia’s largest trading partners as well as the highest contributor in terms of tourist arrivals to the country.

At the same time, the Bintulu MP advised the public not to make any negative comments or reports if they have not yet or do not know the true chronology related to the opening of China’s borders as displayed on social media platforms.

“Although we have seen some news from social media platforms reporting negatively on the opening of China’s borders, I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to everyone to be careful.

“Don’t make unfriendly comments before you know the full story or news, don’t blame the friendship between Malaysia and China, and even let Chinese tourists feel that we don’t accept their presence.

“Regardless of any issue or the coronavirus, both parties should follow the right channels, communicate, discuss good strategies, find a win-win solution and face it together,” he stressed.

China reportedly will reopen its borders on Jan 8 after nearly three years of closure following the Covid-19 pandemic.
