Minister explains last year’s blast incident at Bintulu Samalaju Industrial Park

NO air and water pollution was observed or detected in the surrounding plant area at the Bintulu Samalaju Industrial Park where an explosion took place last year.

Minister of International Trade, Industry, and Investment Datuk Dr Malcolm Mussen Lamoh said that all air pollution control systems functioned well during the incident.

“Meanwhile, the company had a third party technical investigation team to undertake forensic investigation of the incident.

“The company has presented the findings to the government. As such the company will undertake necessary mitigation measures,” he  said in reply to Johnny Pang (GPS-Tanjong Batu) during the question-and-answer session today.

Pang had earlier asked about the measures being enforced for safety supervision and regular disclosure of the air pollution index to address safety and environmental concerns in the area.

Malcolm that the government has enforced several measures in view of the explosion.

“Enforcement is intensified to ensure the industry adheres to legislation by implementing various mitigation measures to reduce the impact of pollution,” he said.

Besides that, he said the industry must appoint a competent person to handle air pollution control equipment, effluent treatment system and scheduled waste.
