KUCHING: A stable government leads to peace and harmony, says state Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian.

Addressing attendees at the Hing Ann Association Chinese New Year dinner here, he said he had attended the dinner annually and this year’s had the largest crowd of some 1,000 – cementing the fact that the stability of the government made this possible.

He urged the crowd to always put Sarawak first and keep what belonged to the state such as oil and gas here.

“With the money from oil and gas, and autonomy for us, Sarawak will stand to benefit a lot. We must be together to make Sarawak better for us all.”

He emphasised the need to continue living in harmony as one big happy family and to forget differences of race and religion.

Dr Sim also praised the Hing Ann Association for not forgetting its senior members by hosting them a dinner annually. More than 300 of them are over the age of 70.
“This tradition of being filial to the elders must be continued. The younger generation should not neglect or forget to take care of their parents, who have sacrificed a lot to take care of them.

“Children should not forget how fortunate they are with the love and care their parents have given them. Now that they are old, it is the children who should bear the responsibility of taking care of their parents,” the guest-of-honour said.
Also at the dinner were chairman of several Chinese associations as well as community leaders.
