MIRI: Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin has urged the federal government to start the wave-breaker project in Jalan Batu 1, Lutong here immediately.

The RM25mil wave-breaker project, which has been approved by the federal government, was supposed to be tendered out last year and expected to be completed in one-and-a-half year.

“It has been almost two years, and the project has still not started,” lamented Lee, who is also Senadin assemblyman.

He said, that the 200m wave-breaker was crucial to ensure the safety of fishermen, especially during the monsoon season.

“During this period (monsoon season), big waves and high tide, debris brought in by the waves have inconvenienced fisherman at Kampung Batu 1, Kuala Baram,” Lee explained.

Furthermore, storms and strong winds had also damaged the boat shade, he added.

Following a heavy storm recently, Lee had instructed a contractor to repair and clear the debris yesterday morning.

Kampung Batu 1, Kuala Baram is located about 20 minutes’ drive from the city centre.
