TELECOMMUNICATION IMPROVEMENT

KUCHING:In efforts to improve telecommunication systems throughout Sarawak, the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (MCMC) has reached several agreements with the Sarawak government.

As reported by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said that as a result of such agreement, a representative from Sarawak would be appointed as commissioner in the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM).

He said that an agreement had also been reached with Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg to place a representative from SKMM in the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA).

“The Sarawak government is so committed since Abang Johari became the chief minister and one of his first steps was to have a comprehensive framework called Digital Sarawak,” he said.

He said this in Parliament on Tuesday, replying to a question from Sibuti MP Lukanisman Awang Sauni regarding the state government’s request to obtain an internet service provider (ISP) licence in rural areas.

“The relationship between the federal and Sarawak governments in this matter is getting closer and I think what is raised by the Sarawak’s chief minister will be one of the matters we discuss,” he said.
