KUCHING: Action would be taken against the offending party if their negligence is found to have contributed to the collapse of Pujut flyover in Miri last Friday.
Works Minister Baru Bian said that as his ministry was in charge of the project, the matter would be taken seriously.
“The contractor must adhere to a very high standard of safety — the international standard — at all construction sites,” he said while attending a Christmas and New Year programme at Sarawak Society for the Blind Centre (SSBC) yesterday.
He assured that a thorough investigation would be carried out after which the ministry would take appropriate actions once the outcome is known.
The Works Ministry will be carrying out a thorough investigation towards the recent collapsed girder beam incident in Miri which left two employees injured.
Baru, who is also Ba Kelalan assemblyman, stressed that his ministry was always very concerned for the safety of construction workers.
“Workers
have a right to safe workplaces,” he said, adding that an order had been issued
to stop all work on the flyover.
“Safety officers have secured the site as it is not a safe place right now.”
Regarding the delay of the project due to the unfortunate happening, he said it
was inevitable because it would take time and money to rectify the situation.
On when the project would be completed, Baru could not give a definite answer,
but he did remember that the flyover is part of work package contract (WPC)
number 11 in the ongoing Pan Borneo Highway project. The package was awarded to
Konsortium KPE Sdn Bhd.
On the two workers who got injured when the flyover collapsed, he said he was told that they suffered minor injuries and were resting at home. He wished them speedy recovery.
