KUCHING: Engagement between the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development with stakeholders and MPs will be held before amendment to the Persons with Disabilities (PwD) Act 2008 is tabled in Parliament.

Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said normally before a proposed legislation is tabled in Parliament, the ministry will hold engagements with the stakeholders as well as with those who will enforce the law.

“It’s a normal procedure we do. And we also will engage with the MPs before the tabling.

“This is because sometime there are MPs who disagree, and we need to finalise it first. And sometimes we have to comply with their request,” she added.

According to news report by Bernama, the amendments to the Persons with Disabilities (PwD) Act 2008 are expected to be finalised by this June, focusing on empowerment and enforcement to safeguard the rights of the group.

Nancy said that the amendments were necessary because many felt the current law was weak or toothless.

“The ministry is discussing that there should be an enforcement aspect in the amendments. We need a stronger law,” she said.
