Ministry working on agrofood potential

KUCHING: The agrofood downstream industry holds out much potential as a source of export revenue for the state.

Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said the Sarawak government through the Department of Agriculture Sarawak has been actively involved in the development of agrofood entrepreneurs in the state.

“In 2022, the department was allocated a total sum of RM300,000 and RM1 million respectively for the implementation of the Agrofood Products Development Programme and the Agrofood Entrepreneurs Development Programme.

“Both have benefited and accumulated total of more than 500 participants and generated a total sale of RM2.3 million,” Rundi revealed.

He added that the department is also aggressively promoting quality accreditation such as Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Halal, Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) and Makanan Selamat Tanggungjawab Industri (MeSTI).

“Currently, a total of 12 entrepreneurs are undergoing training,” Rundi added.
