KUCHING: The recent name change to the Ministry of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development was to spur interests in agriculture among Sarawakians.

Minister Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom pointed out the ministry’s previous name was confined to agriculture thus food industry and commodity are rarely associated.

He also said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is eager to change the traditional perceptions and mindsets about farming and farmers.

“Since changing the ministry’s name, there have been many inquiries on the reasons for the change – this shows that there are interests.

“Premier previously said he does not want Sarawakians to picture farmers wearing hat with hoe working under the sun.

“It is already challenging for us to attract the young generation into agriculture, so that picture must change,” he said.

He said this when officiating at the Pertubuhan Peladang Negeri Sarawak (PPNS) 37th annual general meeting today.

Dr Rundi disclosed that he gave PPNS an empowerment to become a business vehicle so that agriculture can turn into full fledge commercialisation.

However, he reminded that there are criteria such as integrity, discipline and perseverance that must be met in order to gain success in business.

He said his ministry is undertaking various efforts to transform the small farmer community into agroentrepreneurs.

“We are finding ways to carry them, how to give them a kickstart and instil in them that there will be a number who go to become successful in the agriculture industry.

“The government’s role is to facilitate, provide infrastructure and make sure that you can carry on then monitor your progress – once you are matured enough, you will be independent,” he said.

At the same time, Dr Rundi said the agriculture department also plays an important role in finding out and knowing what the needs of the farmers are to assist them better.
