KUCHING: Kota Samarahan is heading for a transformation with much development headed its way but everyone must throw their hats into the rings to bring this to fruition.

Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) Chairman Datuk Peter Minos said on its part the council will keep its end of the bargain.

But in the same breath he called on local leaders, including the assemblymen for the area, to help the council in this effort.

Minos said many up and coming big projects were in the works for Kota Samarahan.

“This includes a huge hospital, a cancer centre, a centre against viruses, an integrated administration centre, MPKS headquarters, Pusat Pemeriksaan Kenderaan Berkomputer (Puspakom) headquarters and a huge shopping mall and housing hub.

“MPKS must and will help wherever and whenever possible in all the projects.

“The Premier’s constituency is Gedong and it is part of Kota Samarahan in which we will see fast development and progress.”

Minos said this at the MPKS annual dinner cum Raya-Gawai Ramah Tamah at Raia Hotel yesterday.

He also said MPKS welcomes the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) project that will be executed by the last quarter of this year as it will help solve Kota Samarahan’s perennial traffic problems.

“The most critical problem in Samarahan is the daily traffic jams at the roundabouts but by July, the Public Works Department (PWD) will get a new contractor and will complete the traffic light project by October next year.

“When the traffic light project is completed, it will bring relief and joy to the long-suffering people of Samarahan. It will be the same when the ART project is on and completed,” he said.

Minos also disclosed that MPKS is working with the Department of Drainage and Irrigation (DID) on the yearly flooding at certain parts of Samarahan which will take time to solve but assured that it will be done by 2025.

On littering, he admitted that talking and convincing people to not throw their waste into the drains, streams, rivers and roadsides is a challenge.

“However, MPKS will continue with the talks and the convincing. This is a must. Changing people’s mindset and habits is not easy but it can be done with patience and perseverance,” he added.
