MIRI: The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Zone 6 Miri is ready to mobilise its assets — among them, a helicopter — in flooded areas as the monsoon season is expected to start soon.

Zone Six chief PgKB Law Poh Kiong said all personnel were now in a state of readiness.

He was met on Monday (Jan 10) here after receiving 150 pieces of calendar for the year 2022 from the Northern Sarawak Journalists Association (NSJA).

He added that low-lying areas or flood-prone areas would be monitored by the respective fire stations in Miri, Lopeng, Batu Niah and Marudi as well as community leaders.

Law said all flood incidents that occurred in Miri Division would be monitored by the Miri Division Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) led by the Miri Resident.

“The Miri DDMC will collect all the information from each agency and will mobilise the agencies according to the situation, including for evacuation and rescue operations.”

He also reminded residents to be on the alert for flash floods that may occur due to the current inclement weather.

“For those who live by the river, we advise them to always monitor the water level and be ready to move if instructed.”

Residents also need to keep their important documents safely and call the 999 emergency line or agencies such as the Resident and District Office, police, Bomba and the Civil Defence Force (APM) if they notice a sudden rise in water level.
