MIRI: The perfect ambassador for Miri is none other than its citizens, says the Tourism, Arts and Culture assistant minister.

“Deepen cooperation between the government and stakeholders in tourism, including residents in Miri itself, will ensure further growth of the tourism industry,” said Datuk Lee Kim Shin.

He was speaking to nearly 100 stakeholders at the Visit Sarawak Year roadshow at the Miri Civic Centre here today.

“As you all know, this year, we have embarked on our Visit Sarawak Year, and my ministry is targeting to rope in about five million tourists to come to Sarawak, and we need everybody involved in the effort.

“Friendly people, good food, clean toilets would affect tourists’ perception about Miri, for example,” he said.

“Hence, the people’s cooperation to ensure the campaign is a success is crucial.

“You are the front-liner in this industry, for example, the taxi or bus drivers, you can be good front-liners by giving information about places of attraction available here,” Lee said.

He also expressed his concern over the quality of some beaches here.

“That is why through the Miri City Council, we have come up with various programmes to clean our beaches so that when tourists come here, they can see clean beaches.”

Lee urged the public to help ensure “our beaches and other places are clean.”

Also present were Miri mayor Adan Yii and Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Ministry representative Siti Awa Suib.
